Start with the customers you already have
When sales are slow, the instinct is to chase strangers: more ads, more posts, more flyers. But the cheapest new customer is almost always someone your current customers already know. They trust the recommendation, they arrive with expectations you already meet, and they tend to stay.
Everything below works better when your existing customers are happy. If people leave unhappy, fix that first — no marketing makes up for a bad experience.
Be easy to find
Before anything else, make sure people who are already looking can find you.
- Claim and complete your Google Business Profile. Hours, photos, services, prices and a link to book or order. This is what shows up when someone searches "salon near me" or "coffee open now".
- Keep the basics consistent everywhere. The same name, address and phone number on your website, Instagram, Yelp and maps.
- Post real photos. Your space, your team, your work. Stock photos make people scroll past.
Earn reviews on purpose
Reviews are word of mouth in public. Most happy customers will leave one if you ask at the right moment — right after a good experience — and make it easy with a short link or a QR code. Reply to every review, especially the bad ones; future customers read the replies.
Partner with your neighbors
Other local businesses already serve your ideal customer. A salon and a boutique, a gym and a smoothie bar, a pet groomer and a vet. Swap flyers, offer each other's customers a small perk, or run a joint event. It costs little and puts you in front of people who already shop in your area.
Bring people back
A customer who comes back is cheaper than a new one, and regulars are the ones who recommend you. A simple loyalty perk — a free item after a few visits, a birthday treat, early access to something new — keeps you top of mind without constant discounts.
Turn regulars into referrals
This is the one that compounds. Your regulars already tell friends about you; a referral program makes it deliberate:
- the customer gets a personal link and a QR code at your counter,
- the friend arrives with a welcome offer,
- the customer is rewarded when the friend actually buys.
Unlike ads, you pay only for results — the reward goes out after a sale, not before. And because each new customer came through someone they trust, they are more likely to become a regular too, which starts the cycle again.
Measure what brings people in
Ask every new customer how they heard about you, or better, let the system track it. After a month you will know which of these channels is working for your business, and you can put your time there.
| Channel | Cost | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Google Business Profile | Free | People already searching nearby |
| Reviews | Free | Turning searchers into visitors |
| Neighbor partnerships | Low | Reaching locals who don't know you |
| Loyalty perks | Low | Bringing customers back |
| Referral program | Only when it works | Steady growth from regulars |
