Why referrals fit restaurants
"Where should we eat?" is one of the most common questions friends ask each other. A recommendation from someone who has been there beats any ad, because it comes with a dish to order and a reason to go.
Restaurants and cafés also have something most businesses don't: frequency. A regular who comes twice a week is the perfect referrer, and a referred friend who likes the place can become the next regular.
Rewards that protect your margin
Food businesses run on thin margins, so the reward has to feel generous while costing little. Items with a low food cost and a high perceived value work best.
| For the new guest | For the guest who referred |
|---|---|
| Free dessert with the first meal | $10 off the next bill |
| Free coffee with the first breakfast | A free pastry |
| Free appetizer for the table | A free drink |
Avoid a percentage off the whole bill for the new guest — a big table turns a small reward into a big discount. Fixed items keep the cost predictable.
Release the referrer's reward only after the friend's first order is paid.
Where to put the QR code
- On every table, next to the menu or on the check presenter.
- At the register for takeout and counter orders.
- On receipts and delivery bags, so the program reaches people who order to go.
Guests join while they wait for the check, and they already have their personal link before they leave.
What servers should say
Servers are busy. Give them a line that fits naturally when they bring the check:
"If you liked it, scan the code — your friends get a free dessert and you get $10 off next time."
Train the team once and put the same sentence on the table display.
Make the first visit easy
The friend's offer should be simple to use: shown on the phone, valid for dine-in and takeout, with no minimum spend or confusing rules. If the coupon needs explaining, people won't use it.
Measure what matters
- How many guests joined the program at the table.
- How many friends came in with a referral coupon.
- Revenue from those first visits compared with the rewards given out.
If guests join but nobody refers, raise the referrer reward. If friends receive the invite but don't come, make the friend's offer more appealing.
Running it with Indik
Indik gives your guests an app with your restaurant's brand where they join from the table QR, get a personal link and share it with friends. The friend shows the coupon on their phone, your team validates it at the register and the referrer's reward is released on its own. You can also print single-use coupons to hand out with takeout orders, and see every referral in the dashboard.
See the general referral program guide, or try Indik free for 14 days, no credit card.
